Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has stepped in to clarify the circumstances surrounding the detention of Asante Akyem North Member of Parliament Kwame Ohene Frimpong at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, dismissing inaccuracies in earlier reports about the lawmaker’s travel arrangements.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News on Wednesday, May 13, the Chief Whip addressed claims that Mr Frimpong had been headed to the United States aboard a Delta Airlines flight, describing the reports as entirely false.

“That is most inaccurate,” Dafeamekpor stated, clarifying that the MP was in fact on a personal trip to the United Kingdom, where his wife and children are based.

He noted that Mr Frimpong regularly travels to London to visit his family and that this trip was no different in that regard.

The Chief Whip further confirmed that the legislator was travelling on a KLM flight at the time of his detention, not Delta Airlines as had been reported.

“As the Chief Whip, I can confirm that this was another private visit to the UK,” he added, underscoring that the journey had no connection to any official parliamentary business.

Parliament had previously acknowledged Mr Frimpong’s detention in a formal statement from the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, which indicated that the Speaker and parliamentary leadership were in active communication with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to obtain a full account of the situation.
