Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, has appointed former Abuakwa South MP and legal practitioner Samuel Atta Akyea as his new lead counsel in the ongoing criminal proceedings against him.

In a statement issued on Monday, the embattled politician confirmed the change in his legal representation, stating that the decision followed careful consultation and was made in line with his constitutional right to choose his lawyer.

He explained that the move is intended to ensure a comprehensive and effective defence throughout the trial.

According to him, the change is not a reflection of dissatisfaction with his previous legal team but rather a strategic legal decision.

Chairman Wontumi expressed appreciation to his former lawyers for their service and commitment, emphasizing that they had handled the case with dedication and professionalism.

He noted that his right to determine his defence team remains protected under the law and must be respected by all parties involved.

The announcement comes shortly after his former lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, filed an application at the High Court seeking to withdraw from the case. However, the court struck out the application, effectively keeping him on record as counsel.

The development had already generated public debate, particularly regarding the legal direction of the high-profile case.

In his statement, Wontumi maintained his innocence and reiterated his confidence in the judicial system, stressing that the charges against him are serious but must be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

He also reminded the public that every accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.

The statement further indicated that Samuel Atta Akyea will now take steps to formally assume full responsibility for the defence, including reviewing court records and filing necessary legal applications.

Wontumi called for calm and urged the public to allow the legal process to proceed without speculation as the matter continues before the courts.
