Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has declared that his side are targeting the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) title, after securing a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Algeria to reach the semi-finals.

The Falcons of Jediane overcame the 2022 runners-up 4-2 on penalties in Zanzibar, booking a last-four clash against Madagascar on Tuesday, August 26, at the Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Appiah, the former Black Stars boss, insists Sudan’s ambitions extend far beyond simply making up the numbers.

“Our goal is beyond just participation. We aspire to achieve the African title,” he told CAFOnline.

The Ghanaian tactician praised the resilience of his players and highlighted the huge backing from fans back home as a driving force behind their campaign.

“Millions of Sudanese people follow us, and they also support us, so I say it frankly: we aspire to achieve the African title,” Appiah added.

Sudan, unbeaten in the tournament so far, have already impressed with a 4-0 win over Nigeria and a draw against holders Senegal in the group stage before eliminating Algeria in the quarters.

Kickoff for Tuesday’s semi-final against Madagascar is scheduled for 16:30 GMT in Dar es Salaam, as Sudan continue their bid for a historic first CHAN crown.
