Tensions boiled over at the Akwatia Lorry Station in the Vawaso Electoral Area on Tuesday during the ongoing by-election, as a heated confrontation broke out between Alhaji Osman Masawudu, the third National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and members of the escort team of Chief Sofo Azorka, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Recounting the incident to the media, Alhaji Masawudu said the clash occurred while he was speaking to journalists near the Akwatia Zongo area, where he had been assigned to monitor the polls.

“I have been assigned to supervise and monitor the election at Akwatia Zongo. In fact, I was granting an interview when a national vice chairman of the NDC, Azorka because of ignorance, comes straight to where I was granting an interview to attack me,” he recounted.

He further claimed the altercation unfolded in front of police officers.

“This incident happened in the presence of the police. He said it clearly that today he will make sure that I will be caned here, myself and Afenyo-Markin,” he added.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the confrontation escalated quickly, with one member of Azorka’s escort reportedly slapping Masawudu before police intervened to restore calm. No arrests have been officially confirmed.

The incident marks yet another flashpoint in an already tense by-election, with repeated confrontations reported between supporters of the two leading political parties, the NPP and the NDC.

Voting is ongoing at 119 polling stations across the Akwatia Constituency, where over 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots before polls close later today.
