The brother of Derrick Köhn has dismissed reports suggesting the defender missed out on Ghana’s preliminary World Cup squad due to complications surrounding his nationality switch.

The Ghana national football team on Monday announced a 28-man squad for next month’s pre-World Cup friendly against Wales national football team, with head coach Carlos Queiroz leaving out the Union Berlin left-back.

Köhn’s omission surprised many supporters, particularly after the 27-year-old featured in Ghana’s recent friendly defeat to Germany and impressed during the 2025/26 Bundesliga season.

Reports circulating in local media claimed the defender had not fully completed his nationality switch from Germany to Ghana, making him ineligible for selection.

However, his brother, Michel Köhn, has publicly rejected those claims.

“Just to clear up the rumours: Derrick’s nationality switch is completed,” Michel wrote in a social media post.

“The reasons for his exclusion can only be explained by the Ghana Football Association and Mr Carlos Queiroz.”

Veteran full-backs Baba Rahman and Gideon Mensah were preferred ahead of the 1. FC Union Berlin defender.

Köhn enjoyed a consistent campaign in Germany, making 29 Bundesliga appearances for Union Berlin while contributing one goal and two assists.

Despite his strong club form and confirmation that his nationality switch has been finalised, the defender was overlooked for Ghana’s squad ahead of the World Cup.

Neither the Ghana Football Association nor Queiroz has publicly explained the decision.

For now, Köhn is set to watch the tournament from home as Ghana prepare for Group L matches against Panama national football team, England national football team and Croatia national football team.
