Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially declared his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidacy ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a Facebook post published on Wednesday, June 18, Dr. Adutwum confirmed he will enter the race once the party formally opens nominations.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he said.

Renowned for spearheading key education reforms during his time as minister, Dr. Adutwum now joins a growing field of NPP stalwarts signaling interest in leading the party into the next election cycle.

His announcement comes amid heightened speculation surrounding the party’s post-2024 future, with former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the current flagbearer widely seen as a frontrunner.

Other potential aspirants, including Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, are also expected to enter the race.

Dr. Adutwum’s declaration follows the NPP’s recent confirmation of January 31, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary, a decision adopted by the party’s National Council based on recommendations from its constitutional review committee.

With the timeline now set, the contest to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections is officially underway.
