Ex-President Mahama critiques Black Stars’ struggles at 2023 AFCON tournament

Former President John Dramani Mahama has shared his perspective on the recent challenges faced by the Black Stars, shedding light on the team’s lacklustre performance in various tournaments.
The national team has encountered early exits in three major competitions, prompting Mahama to analyze the root causes of their struggles.
Underlining their disappointing outings in the 2021 AFCON, 2022 World Cup, and ongoing 2023 AFCON, Mahama highlighted a common factor—building the squad around foreign players.
Mahama expressed concern about the cohesion of the team when relying solely on players from different leagues.
“If you bring only foreign players, they don’t play together in their teams, and then when it is time for competition, you bring them and come and tell them to play, it won’t work.”
He emphasized that bringing together foreign players for competitions after playing in separate teams might not yield the desired results.
The disappointing performance in the 2023 AFCON led to the dismissal of coach Chris Hughton, signaling a need for a new direction.
Mahama’s insights underscore the importance of fostering unity and teamwork, particularly among domestic players, to enhance the national team’s overall performance.
