A galamsey pit collapse at Twifo Mampong in the Central Region has claimed one life, with four others still trapped underground as of Thursday morning, September 25, 2025.

According to eyewitnesses, the five individuals were engaged in illegal mining activities when the pit caved in. Four miners were working underground while one man operated a pumping machine on the surface. The surface operator managed to escape and raised the alarm.

Emergency teams, including personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and local volunteers, rushed to the site to begin rescue operations.

One body has since been recovered, but search efforts continue with hopes of finding survivors. The area has since been cordoned off.

District Chief Executive (DCE) for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Hon. Isaac Yawson, confirmed that the collapsed pit is linked to a well-known illegal mining operator.

“Preliminary investigations show that the pit belongs to a well-known illegal miner. However, the young men are believed to have entered the site secretly at night, without the owner’s knowledge,” he stated.

The DCE disclosed that the pit owner has been ordered to be arrested for endangering lives and violating mining regulations.

“We cannot continue to lose lives because of illegal mining. This is a serious matter, and the full force of the law will be applied,” Hon. Yawson warned.

Rescue operations remain ongoing at the time of filing this report.
