The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, on Thursday, August 14, led members of the Executive Council in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the eight Ghanaians who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash of Wednesday, August 6.

The ceremony, held at the gardens of the Jubilee House, the seat of government, was attended by GFA staff, club officials, and other dignitaries.

Paying tribute, Mr. Okraku described the deceased as “heroes who died in the line of national duty,” adding that their memory would forever be cherished.

“On behalf of the Football Association and the football community, we express our sincere condolences to the President of our Republic, the Government, the people of Ghana, and the families of the eight outstanding departed Ghanaians. We fondly remember Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, who served sports and football diligently as a Deputy Minister of Sports. May their souls rest in perfect peace,” he said.

The GFA President will also lead the football fraternity to the state funeral of the victims at the Black Star Square on Friday, August 15.

The deceased included Defence Minister and former Deputy Sports Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Mohammad Muniru Limuna, NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong, and former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye.

The helicopter’s crew — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Malin Twum-Ampadu, and Sgt. Ernest Addo Mensah — also perished in the crash.
