GHALCA President Cup 2025: Hearts of Oak and Kotoko to face off in the annual one-off game

Ghana big wigs, Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak will face off in the annual “President’s Cup” game in honor of President John Dramani Mahama.
The annual one-off Cup game organized by the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) in honour of the sitting President of Ghana will take place in Accra. The Ghana Football Association has approved the request from GHALCA to host the annual one-off game to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, July 6 2025 at 4pm.
The Cup game which sees two selected teams compete against each other in a solitary game will have Ghana’s two powerhouses, Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko face off against each other in the 2025 edition to revive a classic rivalry in a fabulous and entertaining manner, unlike the previous year which had Ivorian team ASEC Mimosas which were invited to compete against Ghana’s most successful President Cup winners with eight trophies, Asante Kotoko to mark Ghana’s 67th Independence celebration.
Speaking to the media ahead of the big clash, Kotoko head coach, Abdul Karim Zito indicated that he had set sights on winning the trophy in addition to his already won MTN FA Cup trophy in the just ended Ghanain football campaign after losing out in the last two appearances of the Cup:
“It’s always a tough game when you are playing Hearts of Oak. The expectation is very high with both supporters. We are preparing towards it,” Coach Karim Zito said.
“We have to do everything possible to win. This is my second time controlling a team to play the President’s Cup. We will use it to motivate ourselves and then go for the Cup,” Coach Zito said.
In the last two editions of the President’s Cup, Kotoko lost to Hearts of Oak and ASEC Mimosas respectively(2023 and 2024).
Accra Hearts of Oak on the other hand, will be looking to reclaim their past glory in the President Cup in front of their home fans after the 2023 edition where they won in a 1-0 victory over Asante Kotoko before ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast won the 2024 edition.
Also, in regards to the big clash coming up, the GHALCA Board have decided to treat fans in a very special fashion as they have decided to blend the game with entertainment as there will be musical performances by artists of which the headliner will be Ghana’s Dancehall sensation, Shatta Wale who is billed to give promising, electrifying and memorable performance to light up the stadium on Sunday, July 6.
The game promises to be an amazing and enthralling one to honor President John Dramani Mahama and Ghana’s national heritage.
