Ghana secures 1,000 World Cup tickets for supporters – Sports Minister Kofi Adams

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has revealed that the government secured 1,000 tickets in advance for supporters of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing concerns over soaring costs associated with the tournament.
Speaking to Citi News, Mr Adams described the upcoming World Cup in North America as one of the most expensive tournaments for travelling fans and said the early purchase was a strategic move to ensure Ghanaian supporters would not be priced out.
“It is really nightmarish and a difficult one. This is the first time we are trying that. For us as a country, this is the first time we are playing a World Cup in that zone,” he said.
According to the minister, planning ahead has proven crucial in managing costs.
“Luckily for us, we managed and planned very well and effectively. We ordered for 1,000. I believe that that is what has saved the situation because if we were waiting till now, it would have cost us huge sums of money to even get those number of tickets,” he added.
Mr Adams stressed that the government’s effort is part of a broader initiative involving several stakeholders. He noted that the Ghana Football Association and other organisations have also secured tickets independently to help more Ghanaians attend the tournament.
“I wouldn’t say only a thousand. The FA itself has secured some tickets. We have other organisations that also have secured tickets. They are all sponsoring Ghanaians to be able to get in there,” he said.
The announcement comes as the Black Stars intensify preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Ghana will face Wales at Cardiff City Stadium before taking on Jamaica on 10 June in their final warm-up fixture.
Drawn in Group L, Ghana will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on 17 June at BMO Field. The four-time African champions will then take on England in one of the group’s most anticipated matches on 23 June before concluding the group stage against Croatia on 27 June.
Officials hope the early ticket strategy will help ensure a strong Ghanaian presence in the stands as the Black Stars seek to make an impact on football’s biggest stage.
