Ghana’s long-standing dominance at home in Kumasi was unexpectedly shattered with a 1-0 defeat to Angola in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The loss at the Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday marked the end of a remarkable 24-year unbeaten streak for the Black Stars in the Ashanti Regional capital, a venue where they had not tasted defeat since February 2000.

The last home loss came when Siyanbonga Nomvethe’s header on February 6, 2000, consigned Ghana, who were co-hosting the 2000 African Cup of Nations, to defeat in the semi-finals at the then Kumasi Sports Stadium.

Since that setback, Ghana had remained undefeated in countless matches played at the stadium, solidifying its status as a fortress—until the unexpected turn of events on September 5, 2024, when Angola stunned the Black Stars at their spiritual football home.

Angola clinched victory with a last-minute goal in the 93rd minute, seizing on a defensive lapse by Rayo Vallecano defender Abdul Mumin.

Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Ghana failed to find the back of the net, with key players like Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus unable to break down a stubborn Angolan defense.

This defeat leaves Ghana at the bottom of Group E, level with Niger, who also lost their opening match.

With Sudan and Angola now leading the group, Ghana faces a more difficult path to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
