The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, has confirmed that the government has disbursed GH¢809 million to the contractor handling the Pokuase–Nsawam Highway project as of August 4, 2025.

The disclosure comes as construction activities resume on the critical stretch of road, offering long-awaited relief to commuters who have endured weeks of severe traffic congestion due to stalled works.

The contractor’s return to site follows growing pressure from the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), which had issued a one-week ultimatum, threatening to withdraw its services if no action was taken before Wednesday, August 20.

Speaking on Peace FM on Monday, August 18, Mr. Agyei noted that the government had fully met its financial commitments, disbursing the funds in three tranches.

“On July 24, we gave part payment; on July 30, another tranche; and on August 4, the final payment. Altogether, we have honoured the request in full, amounting to about GH¢809 million,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, welcomed the resumption of work and expressed hope that the project will now progress without further delays.

“Some weeks back, we met with the engineer and the three MCEs affected by this road and were assured that action would be taken. I want to believe the payments have now been made, and with the assurances I’ve received, I hope we do not see the work stalled again,” he said.

The Pokuase–Nsawam Highway is a key transport corridor connecting the Greater Accra Region to the Eastern Region and beyond, and its rehabilitation is considered vital for easing traffic and boosting economic activity.
