Former Asante Kotoko board chairman Herbert Mensah has given a measured endorsement of new Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, praising his experience while raising concerns about his World Cup track record.

Speaking to Luv FM, Mensah acknowledged the Portuguese coach’s extensive managerial background, which includes spells with national teams such as Portugal and Iran. However, he noted that Queiroz has yet to translate that experience into standout performances at football’s biggest tournament.

“He does not have a great record at the World Cup, but that does not mean he’s not a very accomplished coach,” Mensah said.

Queiroz now faces a tight schedule as he prepares Ghana for their Group L opener against Panama on 17 June, with just over six weeks to assess his squad and implement his ideas.

The 73-year-old must also finalise his 26-man squad by 1 June, leaving limited time to evaluate players and build cohesion within the team.

Despite reservations about Ghana’s overall readiness and stability, Mensah believes Queiroz’s familiarity with tournament football could still prove decisive.

The Black Stars’ preparations come amid growing scrutiny, as fans and analysts weigh the balance between the coach’s tactical pedigree and the team’s current form heading into the competition.
