I have to thank the players – C. K. Akonnor after coach of the season award
Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor has credited the collective efforts of Gor Mahia’s management, technical team, supporters and players after being named Coach of the Season in the 2025/26 Kenya Premier League.
Akonnor received the award at the SportPesa League Awards ceremony in Nairobi on Thursday, but insisted the recognition was the result of a united effort rather than an individual achievement.
Speaking after collecting the honour, the former Ghana coach expressed gratitude to the club’s leadership for their unwavering support throughout the season.
“I thank God for a wonderful job. I thank management for their support. It’s been wonderful. When we were facing challenges, we would always go to them, and they would support us. So we are very grateful,” he said.
The Gor Mahia boss also praised his backroom staff for their contribution to the club’s successful campaign.
“I want to thank my assistants and the entire technical team,” Akonnor added.
The Ghanaian reserved special praise for the club’s supporters, acknowledging their passion and loyalty despite the pressures that come with representing one of Kenya’s biggest clubs.
“Our supporters are really good. They don’t understand losing, but they always support us,” he said.
However, Akonnor singled out his players for their determination and resilience, describing their mentality as a key factor behind the team’s achievements during the season.
“Above all, I have to thank the players. Especially their mental toughness. It has been really good, and I’m grateful,” he said.
Akonnor’s remarks came moments after he was named the league’s best coach, an award that capped a successful season for Gor Mahia and highlighted the strong bond between the coach and those around him.
