“I’m surprised by the debate” — GFA President defends Otto Addo’s future after World Cup qualification

GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has expressed surprise and disappointment over public debate surrounding the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, despite the team’s successful qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to 3Sports, Okraku defended Addo’s record, highlighting his seven wins and one draw across eight World Cup qualifiers, and his historic achievement as the first Ghanaian to lead the national team to back-to-back World Cups.
“Otto Addo comes back, plays eight games, wins seven, and draws one — and then all of a sudden, people are talking about the future of the coach,” Okraku said.
“It still surprises me up to today.”
While Addo faced criticism after Ghana’s winless AFCON 2025 qualifying campaign, which saw the team miss the tournament for the first time since 2004, he responded by steering the Black Stars to top spot in Group I, securing their fifth World Cup appearance.
Upcoming Black Stars schedule
- Asian Tour: Ghana will face Japan and South Korea in November friendlies as part of their World Cup preparations.
- Group Draw: The 2026 FIFA World Cup draw takes place on December 5 in Washington, where Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents.
With Otto Addo expected to remain in charge, the focus now shifts to building squad chemistry, refining tactics, and restoring public confidence ahead of the global showpiece in USA, Canada, and Mexico.
