Jurgen Klopp to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has announced that he will step down from his role at the end of the season, citing a depletion of energy as the primary reason for his decision.
Klopp, 56, took over as Liverpool manager in October 2015, and his contract was originally set to run until 2026.
During his tenure, Klopp achieved significant success with Liverpool, winning the Champions League in 2019 and guiding the team to their first Premier League title in 30 years during the 2019-20 season.
“I told the club already in November,” said 56-year-old Klopp, who has announced his decision with his side top of the Premier League.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it.
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.
“It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.”
Currently, Liverpool sits at the top of the Premier League table.
Klopp revealed that he had informed the club about his decision in November and emphasized his deep affection for Liverpool, the city, the supporters, the team, and the staff.
Despite his love for the club, Klopp expressed that he is running out of energy and believes that stepping down is the right decision.
The news comes as a surprise to many, given Klopp’s successful and transformative impact on Liverpool during his tenure.
The club will now begin the process of searching for a new manager to lead them into the future.
