Limit campaign periods to six months– GII

The Executive Director of the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Mary Awelana Addah, is urging for tighter controls on political campaigning in Ghana, calling for a cap on campaign periods and greater transparency in campaign financing.
Speaking at the maiden National Dialogue organized by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in Accra, Madam Addah proposed limiting campaign seasons to a maximum of six months, arguing that extended campaign periods drive up costs and weaken accountability.
“If we can regularise the space of campaigning, particularly with our political actors, then it helps us ground our politics in law. The current political parties’ framework does not exhaustively deal with these issues, so we believe we need a stronger regime,” she said.
Madam Addah revealed that civil society organisations have already commissioned a draft bill aimed at establishing a legal framework to regulate both the duration and financing of political campaigns.
“Civil society groups have already discussed this and even consulted someone to draft a bill. But what we are pushing for is a regime that reduces the period of campaigns. If that is achieved, then political actors will not need the vast resources required to prosecute an agenda over more than two years,” she added.
The proposed reforms are part of broader efforts to enhance transparency and level the playing field ahead of future elections.
