Mahama gov’t intolerant of dissent– Godfred Dame

Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has accused the Mahama administration of clamping down on dissent and exhibiting intolerance towards opposing views.
His comments follow the continued detention of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who was arrested for allegedly making offensive statements deemed likely to breach public peace.
In a statement on the matter, Mr. Dame criticised what he described as an erosion of democratic values under the current administration.
“Even in the most serious case I prosecuted, which was the treason trial, all the accused persons were granted bail on the first day. This is a sharp contrast when it comes to the situation Abronye is facing,” he said.
He pointed to previous high-profile cases under the former NPP government, where individuals such as former minister Collins Dauda, current Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, and businessman Richard Jakpa were granted bail, often on self-recognisance.
“So, I am saying that there ought to be tolerance for free speech, and the intolerance of this administration is very repulsive,” he added.
