Manchester United are reportedly in discussions with Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim to become Erik ten Hag's replacement following the Dutchman’s dismissal on Monday due to the club's underwhelming season start.

Amorim, 39, is highly respected in European football and has revitalized Sporting since joining in 2020, guiding them to two Primeira Liga titles — one of which was Sporting's first league title in 19 years.

Despite the ongoing talks, the full details of United’s discussions with Amorim remain undisclosed, and it is uncertain whether other candidates are still in contention for the position.

When asked about the Manchester United role during a news conference on Monday, Amorim acknowledged he anticipated the question but declined to comment further on the matter.

In the meantime, United have promoted Erik ten Hag’s assistant, Ruud van Nistelrooy, to interim manager.

However, the club has not specified how long Van Nistelrooy will lead the team, leaving it unclear if he will be at the helm for Wednesday's Carabao Cup clash with Leicester City.

United have also confirmed that Van Nistelrooy will not be conducting Tuesday's pre-match press conference, with Ten Hag handling media duties for the EFL Cup game after Sunday’s defeat to West Ham.

Amorim’s potential appointment would bring a promising tactical mind to Old Trafford, with a track record of success and an innovative approach to the game that has garnered widespread attention.
