A Kasoa Ofaakor Circuit Court has remanded six suspects into police custody in connection with an alleged child trafficking and stealing syndicate with operations spanning Kasoa and parts of Accra, while a 74-year-old retired midwife linked to the case was released on bail.

Presided over by Her Ladyship Nana Asantewaa Attakorah, the court ordered the six to remain in custody as investigations continue. The elderly retired midwife was granted bail of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.

The accused persons named before the court include Lucinda Naomi Otchere, a midwife at Trust Mother and Child Hospital in Osu, alongside Janet Larbie, Mary Dotse, Yvonne Twumasi, Sikena Umar, Grace Afriyie, and Regina Agyeiwaa.

All parties are expected to reappear before the court on May 27, 2026.

Prosecution, led by ASP Sylvester Agbezudor, told the court that the case originated from the alleged abduction of a seven-year-old girl in Kasoa, who was handed to a midwife believed to be serving as a middleman before being sold to a woman in Accra.

The court heard that a suspect initially denied any wrongdoing when confronted by the child’s parents but later admitted involvement under interrogation, which in turn led investigators to the remaining accused.

Further enquiries allegedly revealed two more cases involving children from the same mother — an eight-month-old baby and a five-year-old girl.

Prosecutors told the court the infant was allegedly sold for GH¢60,000. The baby has since been recovered by authorities, but the five-year-old girl remains missing and efforts to locate her are ongoing.

Speaking outside the courtroom, the mother of the seven-year-old victim said her daughter disclosed she had been handed over to a wealthy woman in Accra.

The father of the two other children told reporters the family remains gripped by anguish as their youngest daughter’s whereabouts continue to be unknown.

Investigations into the full scope of the alleged trafficking network are ongoing.
