Nkoko Nkitinkiti programme to roll out in October– Agric Minister
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to launching the much-anticipated Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme in the first week of October, following delays sparked by concerns from poultry industry stakeholders.
Initially slated for July, the programme’s rollout was postponed due to what stakeholders described as inadequate consultation and engagement.
The initiative is a key part of government efforts to reduce Ghana’s over $300 million annual poultry import bill by boosting local production.
Speaking at the launch of the second phase of the West Africa Livestock Marketing Programme (PACBAO), organised by the ECOWAS Commission in Accra, Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, assured poultry farmers that the revised launch timeline will be met.
“Plans are at an advanced stage, and it is expected that by the first week of October, His Excellency the President will officially launch the programme. The media will be invited, after which distribution will begin across various constituencies to reach beneficiary farmers,” he said.
Mr. Opoku noted that the final beneficiary list is being compiled, and procurement processes with suppliers are nearing completion. “Very soon, implementation will take off,” he added.
The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme is being positioned as a flagship agricultural intervention, aiming to reduce the country’s dependency on imported poultry while creating sustainable jobs—particularly for youth and women in rural communities.
By supporting domestic poultry production, the Ministry of Food and Agriculture hopes to conserve foreign exchange and strengthen food security through local empowerment.
