Minister for Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has said the former President Akufo-Addo’s administration fully deserved the intense public criticism it received over its handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Monday, September 15, the minister stated that the previous government’s actions and in some cases, inaction, fueled public mistrust and justified the backlash it faced during its tenure.

“The previous government came under fierce criticism and I didn’t mince words, and they deserved every condemnation they received,” he stated.

He added that there were points during the Akufo-Addo administration where “governmental complicity” in illegal mining activities became apparent, an outcome he described as deeply disappointing.

According to the minister, Ghanaians were right to demand accountability, particularly in the face of widespread environmental degradation. He emphasised that leadership must inspire confidence, not suspicion.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu also acknowledged that the current NDC administration has faced similar criticism from citizens and stakeholders over the continuing impact of galamsey on water bodies, farmlands, and ecosystems.

“Government fully appreciates the genuine concerns people have expressed on galamsey, and these are not matters we take lightly,” he said.

While assuring the public of ongoing efforts to combat the menace, he stressed that ending illegal mining is a shared responsibility and not one the government can tackle alone.

“We cannot pretend it is an easy fight, but what we can assure Ghanaians is that the government has not lost sight of its duty to protect lives, livelihoods and the environment,” he noted.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu called on the public to support government interventions and to resist political interference that often hampers enforcement efforts.

“We must all rally behind the measures being implemented. The survival of our water bodies and farmlands cannot be compromised,” he added.
