Panama has officially unveiled its final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting the stage for a crucial Group L showdown against the Black Stars next month.

The Central American side, one of CONCACAF’s representatives at the expanded 48-team tournament, will face Ghana in their opening group match as they seek to make a stronger impression than during their debut appearance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Panama has been drawn alongside Ghana, England and Croatia in what many analysts consider one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

Ghana Yet To Confirm Final Squad

While Panama has already settled on its final squad, Ghana is still expected to trim its provisional 28-man list before FIFA’s official deadline.

New Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to announce Ghana’s final 26-man squad on June 1 as preparations intensify ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Portuguese tactician has already come under pressure from Ghanaian supporters eager to see a strong blend of experience and youthful energy capable of helping the Black Stars survive a difficult group stage.

Carrasquilla Headlines Panama Squad

Panama’s squad is headlined by several experienced internationals, including midfield playmaker Adalberto Carrasquilla, who remains the creative heartbeat of the team despite recent injury concerns.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who plays for Mexican side Pumas UNAM, recently suffered an injury during a league game but has still been included in the squad.

Carrasquilla is widely regarded as Panama’s most influential player after winning the Golden Ball award at the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Defensively, Panama will rely heavily on Jose Cordoba of Norwich City and experienced full-back Michael Murillo, who currently plays for Turkish giants Besiktas.

Veteran midfielder Anibal Godoy of San Diego FC also retains his place in the squad and is expected to provide leadership and stability in midfield.

Panama Eye Historic World Cup Campaign

The upcoming tournament marks only Panama’s second appearance at the FIFA World Cup after their historic debut in 2018.

Although they exited at the group stage in Russia after losing all three matches, the Panamanians believe the experience gained over recent years can help them become more competitive this time around.

The team has steadily improved within the CONCACAF region, establishing itself as a difficult opponent capable of troubling bigger football nations.

Ghana Face Tough Opening Test

For Ghana, the opening clash against Panama is already being viewed as a potentially decisive encounter in determining qualification from Group L.

With England considered favourites to top the group and Croatia possessing vast tournament experience, securing maximum points against Panama could become critical to the Black Stars’ hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.

Former Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris recently expressed confidence that Ghana can progress deep into the tournament if preparations are handled properly.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian football legends including Michael Essien have backed the Black Stars to challenge strongly despite the difficult draw.
