Pathum Thani: A late Nguyen Van Quyet penalty gave Vietnam’s Hanoi FC a 1-0 victory over Thailand’s Bangkok United in a 2019 AFC Champions League Preliminary Stage 2 tie at the Thammasat Stadium on Tuesday.

Hanoi are through to the playoffs and will face Chinese Super League club Shandong Luneng on February 19.

Bangkok United caused early problems for Hanoi following a set-piece situation in the eighth minute, but with the goalmouth at his mercy Nelson Bonilla sent his effort wide.

Hanoi settled into the match after the 15th minute mark and tested Bangkok goalkeeper Michael Falkesgaard, who collected Papa Omar Faye's shot with ease.

Ganiyu Oseni wasted an opportunity to score for Hanoi when he was sent through on goal following a defensive error.

But the forward failed to make the most of his chance, shooting straight at Falkesgaard.

Alexandré Pölking’s side had their best chance in front of goal in the 34th minute but Falkesgaard was at his best to keep out Do Duy Manh's close-range volley as the game ended all square at half-time.

Bangkok United, who finished runners-up in the 2018 Thai Premier League, came close to breaking the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half.

Bonilla went head on with Hanoi shot stopper Nguyen Van Cong. However, the forward played one too many touches which allowed Van Cong to close him down.

Bangkok United dominated the half but couldn’t capitalise on their chances with Tristan Do and Bonilla both failing to find the target with 15 minutes left in normal regulation.

However, Hanoi received a lifeline when they earned a penalty after Ganiyu Oseni was brought down in the danger area late in the game.

Van Quyet made no mistake from the spot to give the 2018 V.League champions a place in the playoffs.Source: the-afc.com
