President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish a new national airline as part of a broader initiative to strengthen Ghana’s aviation sector, improve global connectivity, and support economic growth through increased trade and tourism.

The President made the announcement while addressing participants at the Ghana-UK Investment Summit 2026 in London on Monday, June 1, 2026, where he outlined his administration’s vision of positioning Ghana as a leading transportation and investment hub in West Africa.

President Mahama is currently on an official visit to the United Kingdom aimed at attracting investment and deepening economic ties between Ghana and the UK. The visit is also expected to include engagements with King Charles III and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer as part of efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Speaking at the summit, the President said the proposed national carrier would complement ongoing investments in aviation infrastructure across the country and help improve Ghana’s connectivity with major international destinations.

According to him, efficient air transport remains vital for facilitating business activities, promoting tourism, expanding exports, and attracting foreign investment.

“We are expanding airport infrastructure and pursuing the establishment of a new national airline to improve connectivity and facilitate trade, tourism, and exports between Ghana and major international markets, including, of course, the United Kingdom,” President Mahama stated.

He noted that the government is working to modernise airports and increase capacity to accommodate growing passenger traffic and cargo volumes, positioning Ghana as a competitive gateway for regional and international travel.

Beyond aviation, the President highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade the country’s ports and logistics infrastructure to support trade and investment.

“We are also modernising our ports and logistics systems to strengthen Ghana’s position as the preferred trade and investment gateway to Africa,” he added.

The proposed national airline is expected to play a key role in the government’s strategy to enhance connectivity, stimulate economic activity, and reinforce Ghana’s position as a regional hub for commerce, tourism, and investment.
