Senegal eye Hervé Renard as Lions of Teranga new head Coach

The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) is reportedly considering former Africa Cup of Nations-winning coach Hervé Renard as a leading candidate to become the next head coach of the Lions of Teranga following the departure of Pape Thiaw.

Thiaw’s exit comes in the aftermath of Senegal’s disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, which ended with a dramatic 3-2 defeat by Belgium in the Round of 32.

The early elimination reportedly intensified scrutiny of the coaching staff, with local media suggesting Thiaw and members of his technical team stepped down after failing to meet the nation’s expectations.

The FSF has since begun the search for a new manager to lead one of Africa’s most successful national teams, with Renard emerging as one of the frontrunners because of his extensive international experience and proven track record on the continent.

The French coach is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most accomplished managers, having guided Zambia to a historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2012 before repeating the feat with Ivory Coast three years later.

Renard most recently managed Tunisia, but left after the Carthage Eagles endured a disappointing 2026 World Cup campaign, failing to progress from the group stage after defeats to Sweden, Japan and the Netherlands.

Despite that setback, the 57-year-old remains highly respected for his ability to build competitive national teams and deliver success in major tournaments.

For Senegal, appointing a coach of Renard’s pedigree would signal an intention to quickly recover from their World Cup disappointment while preserving their status among Africa’s elite football nations.

The Lions of Teranga have enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their history in recent years, highlighted by their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title and consistent appearances at major international tournaments.

Whoever takes charge will face the challenge of maintaining those standards while rebuilding confidence and preparing the squad for the next cycle of continental and global competitions.

Although Renard is understood to be among the leading candidates, the Senegal Football Federation has yet to make an official announcement, with discussions over Thiaw’s permanent successor still ongoing.
