Sky Train Trial: Asamoah, Ameyaw-Akumfi Yet to File Defence as Deadline looms
Former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Chief Executive Officer, Solomon Asamoah, and the Fund’s former Board Chairman, Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, have yet to submit their defence in the ongoing trial over the failed Accra Sky Train project.
The update was provided by Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, July 18.
He disclosed that the statutory deadline for both accused persons to file their witness statements or indicate their defence strategy expires next week.
According to him, the prosecution has not received any witness statements from either of the accused since the court directed them to open their defence.
The latest development follows a recent High Court ruling that dismissed the accused persons’ submission of no case, with the court finding that prosecutors had presented sufficient evidence requiring the two men to respond to the allegations.
The case stems from a controversial US$2 million payment made by the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund in 2019 as part of an intended equity investment in a project development company linked to the proposed Accra Sky Train initiative.
Prosecutors allege the payment was approved without the required authorisation from the GIIF Board and argue that the ambitious rail project never progressed, resulting in financial loss to the state.
Despite the allegations, both Solomon Asamoah and Prof. Ameyaw-Akumfi have pleaded not guilty and continue to deny any wrongdoing.
The High Court is expected to resume proceedings after the deadline for the defence filings, with the next phase of the trial likely to determine whether the accused persons will testify or call witnesses in their defence.
