Tamaligu residents laud GIYSA for water intervention, call on gov’t for electricity, roads

Residents of Tamaligu in the Tolon District of the Northern Region have expressed their profound gratitude to the Ghana Islamic Youth Sadaqah Association (GIYSA) for making potable drinking water available to them, providing solution to the long standing problem of sharing the only existing water source with the animals in the village.
To add to their woes, the water which was not wholesome for human consumption, was also very far away from their settlements, worsening the situation and making life unbearable for them.
GIYSA, a Non-profit organisation for Islamic propagation and poverty alleviation has however relieved the suffering of the residents by drilling a borehole for the community.
In an interview with Ghanaguardian.com some of the residents described GIYSA’s intervention as “devine”, without which, they would still be wallowing in hardships.
“We used to walk about 5 kilometres before getting water and even that water is not good for human beings to drink, but we still shared it with the animals because we had no choice. We are really grateful to GIYSA and their donors for this kindness.”
Some other residents also lamented that authorities come there prior to elections to make so many promises to them, but evade them after elections.
“When it is time for elections, they come here and tell us they will bring electricity to us, and they will give us water and fix our roads, but after elections, we don’t see them again.”
“We are calling on the government to at aleast add one more tap to this one GIYSA has constructed for us and also we beg them to bring light to our community because we are struggling. Other villages around us are tarred and they have light, but we are left out, even though we vote too”, another resident added.
Meanwhile President of GIYSA, Mr Suleiman Dramani told Ghanaguardian.com he was alarmed at the sight of their drinking water and that was what pushed him to help them by way of Sadaqah.
“We happened to know about them through a proposal we received from a brother in our email. He requested earlier we come and do Dawwah and preach to the people of the village. However upon getting to the village, we realized a lot of challenges which made our stay very tough for us. The water for drinking and bathing were all contaminated water, also there was no light in the community and in fact it wasn’t easy because each time we were thirsty we had to go more than 10 km to buy sachet water in the next township.”
Mr Sueliman continued that due to the lack of electricity in the village, GIYSA had to work on a Solar panel project to provide the Chief’s house, as well the house that houses the tap with electricity to fuel the tap.

The tea-like liquid next to the food was the drinking water served to Team GIYSA by the residents during their first visit to Tamaligu village.
“We followed up to thier dam to check the source of water and we found dogs, cows and other animals drinking from this same stagnant water dam. And this is the water the people depended on for thier livelihood, so we took some videos and pictures of the dam and thier situation, and shared it on our social media handles hoping for some support from a philanthropist or any NGO. Lo and behold, we had support from a brother, called Yusuf Gulamani. He actually came in and helped to drill a borehole for the community. And since there was no power ( light ) to pump the water, he installed solar panel to generate electricity for the borehole and some few houses.”
He expressed joy over the successful completion of the project and urged the residents to take better care of the facility.
“By the grace of Allah everything was done and the people are very happy for such support.”
