Team Ghana praised after two-medal Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow

The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and Commonwealth Games Association (CGA) Ghana have commended Team Ghana after the country finished the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with two medals.

Zinabu Issah won silver in the women’s T57 shot put, while Amadu Mohammed secured bronze in the men’s 55kg boxing division.

In a statement issued in Glasgow, the GOC/CGA said Ghana’s athletes had shown courage, resilience and determination while competing against some of the leading sportspeople in the Commonwealth.

The organisation congratulated Issah and Mohammed on their medal-winning performances and also highlighted the efforts of Ghana’s men’s 4x100m relay team.

The relay squad consisted of Joseph Paul Amoah, Mustapha Bokpin, Saminu Abdul-Rasheed and Benjamin Azamati.

“Despite the intensity of the competition, Ghana’s athletes rose to the challenge, working harder, pushing their limits and delivering respectable results that brought pride and honour to the nation,” the statement said.

The GOC/CGA said the country’s wider delegation had also performed creditably across a range of disciplines, including athletics, para-athletics, boxing, cycling, judo, swimming, para swimming, para powerlifting and weightlifting.

It noted that several Ghanaian competitors narrowly missed out on medals, but said their performances had nevertheless demonstrated the progress and potential of Ghanaian sport on the international stage.

The committee described the campaign as evidence of the country’s “never-say-die” spirit and said the athletes had remained committed throughout the competition, including when facing strong opposition.

The organisation also thanked the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, for its support during the Games.

Corporate sponsors, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel and team management were also recognised for their contribution to the delegation’s campaign.

The GOC/CGA extended its appreciation to the media, Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and members of the Ghanaian community in Scotland, who supported Team Ghana during its time in Glasgow.

Although Ghana’s medal tally stood at two, the committee said the success of the campaign should not be judged solely by the number of medals won.

It said the experience gained by the athletes in Glasgow would provide an important platform for future development, with preparations now beginning for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The GOC/CGA added that the unity and fighting spirit displayed by Team Ghana were equally important achievements and offered encouragement for the country’s future international campaigns.

“The true success of Team Ghana’s campaign was beyond medals won, but the courage, unity, resilience and fighting spirit displayed against world-class opposition,” the statement added.
