Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has dismissed reports suggesting Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey could miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup because of visa issues, confirming that the player has already secured the necessary documentation to enter the United States.

Speaking to Joy News, Mr Adams said Partey had previously faced difficulties obtaining a US visa but stressed that the matter had been resolved.

“I am not aware that he has been denied a visa,” Mr Adams said. “I knew his previous visa to the United States had some challenges, but he has since been issued a visa to be able to enter the United States, and I am unaware that he has been denied a visa to Canada.”

Speculation over Partey’s availability for Ghana’s World Cup campaign emerged following reports that the midfielder could encounter travel complications ahead of the Black Stars’ group-stage fixture against Panama on 17 June in Canada.

However, the minister said there had been no official communication from immigration authorities or tournament organisers indicating that the player would be prevented from travelling to any of the host countries.

“I don’t think if any such thing had happened, they would have communicated to me as Minister for Sports and Recreation,” he said. “I haven’t received any such communication. I’ve been in touch with the Football Association and the management who are currently in the United States.”

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, making international travel clearance a key requirement for all participating players and officials.

Questions surrounding Partey’s travel status have intensified because of his ongoing legal case in the United Kingdom. The former Arsenal midfielder is facing multiple rape charges and is due to stand trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.

Partey has consistently denied all allegations.

Earlier this year, his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, reiterated his position, saying: “Thomas Partey continues to deny all charges against him. He has cooperated fully with the police throughout. Given that legal proceedings are ongoing, there will be no further comment.”

Under the conditions of his bail, Partey is required to inform authorities of any plans to travel abroad.

Despite the speculation, Ghanaian officials insist there is currently no indication that the midfielder will be unable to join the Black Stars for the tournament.
