Trade Minister calls for cement price adjustments following cedi gains

Minister for Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has called on cement manufacturers to review and adjust their pricing structures following recent improvements in the value of the cedi.
This appeal was made during a meeting with the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers, Ghana (COCMAG), aimed at addressing public concerns over high cement prices despite positive macroeconomic trends.
The discussions focused on pricing strategies, product standardisation, and regulatory compliance within the sector. Minister Ofosu-Adjare highlighted the importance of ensuring that the benefits of the cedi’s appreciation are felt by consumers.
In addition, she announced that starting in August, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) would ramp up its quarterly inspections to ensure manufacturers meet national product standards. The Minister warned that any companies failing to comply with regulations could face closure.
Cement manufacturers present at the meeting—including Ghacem, CIMAF, CBI, Dangote, Dzata, Empire, and Diamond Cement—welcomed the government’s involvement. They acknowledged the recent stability of the exchange rate as a positive development and indicated that, if the trend continues, cement prices could be reduced.
The manufacturers also reiterated their commitment to maintaining product quality and fair competition through adherence to industry standards.
