Firefighting personnel have executed a successful rescue of a motorist imprisoned within the mangled chassis of a commercial tanker after the vehicle departed the Accra-Kumasi Highway and became lodged in dense vegetation alongside the major transportation artery.

The incident occurred in the predawn hours of Sunday, July 12, 2026, when a HOWO tanker bearing registration 11 AG 2649 and travelling from Kumasi toward the capital abruptly veered from the roadway and plunged into adjacent scrubland at Amanase in the Eastern Region.

The vehicle’s trajectory off the engineered surface and into uncontrolled terrain produced impact trauma sufficiently severe to trap the driver within the wreckage.

Suhum Municipal Fire Station personnel mobilised rapidly upon receiving distress notification, deploying a seven-member rescue contingent equipped with specialised extraction apparatus.

The team moved into the bush and initiated mechanical extrication procedures designed to breach the vehicle’s compromised structure and liberate the imprisoned motorist from the twisted metal confining him.

The rescue succeeded in freeing the driver, who was subsequently transferred to police custody and conveyed to Suhum Government Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained during the collision and entrapment.

No fatalities emerged from the incident, a fortuitous outcome that stands in contrast to numerous highway crashes that consume lives through catastrophic impact or delayed medical intervention.

The precise mechanism by which the tanker departed the roadway remains under investigation. Preliminary assessment suggests either mechanical system failure affecting steering or braking apparatus, or human error involving driver inattention, fatigue or misjudgment of trajectory during curve negotiation.

The vehicle’s front section sustained extensive damage consistent with high-velocity impact against vegetation and potentially subsurface obstacles encountered during the off-road trajectory.

The extent of structural compromise attests to the violence inherent in the collision sequence.

Investigators continue their examination of the scene and the vehicle to establish definitive causative factors and ascertain whether mechanical dysfunction played a role in the accident.
