Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has warned that any attempts to intimidate voters during the upcoming Akwatia by-election will be firmly resisted.

Speaking to party supporters during a campaign event in Akwatia on Wednesday, August 27, Mr. Gbande reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to peace but made it clear the party would not tolerate violence on election day.

“We won’t bring violence here. NDC is not a violent party, but on the 2nd of September, if anybody decides to come to the town or the voting grounds with violence, they will come, but they will not know how to leave. Violence begets violence,” he said.

He urged supporters to remain focused on grassroots mobilisation, encouraging them to work hard for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako.

“Let us go in our numbers to conduct thorough work. Let us encourage the people to vote for our candidate. We can’t win this election if we don’t go out to work. Let us be encouraged,” he said.

Meanwhile, NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah has also expressed confidence in a peaceful by-election, reiterating the party’s belief in a free and fair process.

The by-election, set for Tuesday, September 2, will see the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu face off against the NDC’s Bernard Bediako. The contest has drawn national interest due to Akwatia’s status as a swing constituency.

To ensure calm, the Ghana Police Service has announced the deployment of over 600 officers, some of whom have undergone recent intensive training, to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.
