We have a good team – Abdul Majeed Waris on Black Stars 2026 World Cup squad

Former Ghana forward Abdul Majeed Waris believes the Black Stars have what it takes to compete with the world’s best at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the team is capable of overcoming every opponent in their group.
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest tournament after securing qualification for the competition, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canadaand Mexico next month.
The Ghana national football team have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team.
Ghana will begin their campaign against Panama before facing England and Croatia in what many observers consider one of the tournament’s toughest groups.
Despite the challenge ahead, Waris remains confident the Black Stars can make an impact.
“I wouldn’t say that because I think we have a good team to win each of those games,” the former striker told Citi Sports when asked about Ghana’s chances.
“What it comes down to is the preparation and then focusing mentally because at that stage you cannot switch off even for a minute because that can turn everything around.”
The Black Stars are currently in Cardiff preparing for their pre-World Cup friendly against Wales national football team on 2 June.
Head coach Carlos Queiroz has been overseeing training sessions at Dragon Park as the team intensifies preparations ahead of the tournament.
Ghana are expected to spend a week in Cardiff before travelling to the United States for the next stage of their training camp.
Queiroz is also expected to use the friendly matches and training sessions to assess his players before announcing the final 26-man squad for the World Cup.
Ghana previously featured at the World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2022, with their best performance coming in South Africa in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals, becoming only the third African nation to achieve the feat.
