WhatsApp Status helped Black Sherif build music empire before fame – Kafui Dey

Before sold-out concerts, international recognition and multiple award wins, Ghanaian music sensation Black Sherif was quietly building a loyal fan base using one of the simplest tools available on a smartphone — WhatsApp Status.
That revelation was made by renowned Ghanaian broadcaster and media personality Kafui Dey, who shared insights into the musician’s early journey to stardom during an interview on Joy Prime TV.
According to Kafui Dey, Black Sherif’s rise to prominence was not driven by expensive marketing campaigns or major record label support. Instead, the award-winning artist relied heavily on social media, particularly WhatsApp Status, to distribute his music and gradually build a dedicated audience.
Recounting a personal conversation he once had with the reigning Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artist of the Year, Kafui Dey said he was curious about how the young musician had become so popular within such a short period.
“I asked him, ‘How did you become so popular?’ and he said, ‘WhatsApp Status,’” Kafui Dey revealed.
According to the broadcaster, Black Sherif consistently shared his songs, recordings and musical content through his WhatsApp Status updates, allowing friends, acquaintances and contacts to listen to his work.
Over time, those contacts shared the music with others, creating a ripple effect that gradually expanded his audience beyond his immediate network.
The strategy proved effective as more people became familiar with his music long before he achieved national fame. What started as a simple promotional effort eventually evolved into a grassroots movement that helped establish his brand and identity as an emerging artiste.
Kafui Dey explained that Black Sherif first realized his music career was gaining momentum when he began receiving recognition from people he had never met before.
The broadcaster recounted that the young artist knew his breakthrough moment had arrived when strangers in his hometown of Konongo started approaching him to compliment his music.
According to Kafui Dey, that experience served as a clear indication that Black Sherif’s songs had traveled far beyond his personal contacts and were reaching audiences organically.
Using the musician’s journey as an example, Kafui Dey highlighted the transformative role social media now plays in the careers of creative professionals.
He noted that modern digital platforms have removed many of the traditional barriers that once prevented young talents from reaching audiences.
Unlike previous generations of musicians who depended heavily on radio stations, television appearances and record labels to gain exposure, today’s artistes can directly connect with listeners through social media platforms.
Kafui Dey described social media as a personal broadcasting platform that allows musicians, content creators and entrepreneurs to showcase their work, build communities and grow their brands independently.
Beyond discussing Black Sherif’s marketing strategy, the veteran broadcaster also praised the artiste’s character and mindset.
According to him, Black Sherif possesses a level of maturity that exceeds his age, describing him as calm, disciplined and exceptionally focused on his career goals.
“Blacko is a very gentle person, but he is extremely focused. When he speaks, he sounds much older than he is. He sounds like a 40-year-old man, yet he is only in his early twenties,” Kafui Dey remarked.
