224 licensed radio stations across Ghana currently off-air— NCA report

A total of 224 licensed radio stations across Ghana are currently off-air, according to the latest data released by the National Communications Authority (NCA).

Speaking at the Broadcasting at the Crossroads forum hosted by the Africa Media Bureau in Accra on Friday, September 26, Bernard Amissah-Ocran, Acting Director of Engineering at the NCA, disclosed that out of 763 authorised FM stations nationwide, only 539 are currently operational.

The NCA’s second-quarter 2025 report provides a detailed regional breakdown of radio station activity.

The Ashanti Region leads with 116 authorised stations, of which 85 are active and 31 are inactive. It is followed by the Western Region, with 88 stations (59 active, 29 inactive), and the Greater Accra Region, which has 84 authorised stations, 71 of them on air.

Other regions such as Bono (59 stations, 46 active), Central, Eastern, Northern, and Volta also reported a notable number of inactive stations. The North East Region recorded the fewest licensed stations, with just 13, only seven of which are currently on air.

The NCA also categorised the 763 authorised FM stations by type:

  • Public: 31

  • Community: 155

  • Campus: 5

  • Commercial: 548

  • Foreign-Authorised: 24
