2018 World Cup: Egypt suffer winger Mostafa Fathi blow ahead of Ghana clash

Egypt have suffered a major injury blow as winger Mostafa Fathi has been ruled out of next week’s 2018 World Cup qualifying clash against Ghana because of injury.

The Zamalek winger was part of the 23-man squad released by coach Hector Cuper to face the Black Stars on 13 November in Alexandria.

Fathi has now been withdrawn from the squad following a knee injury he suffered while training with Cairo side Zamalek.

“Fathi will not be able to feature against Ghana because of his injury. He was excluded from the squad,” Egypt’s national team director Ihab Leheta said late on Thursday.

The news offers some sort of hope for the Black Stars who have also been rocked by the absence of their two key players Asamoah Gyan and Kwadwo Asamoah who both have injury concerns.

Egypt will host Ghana at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria on 13 November.

The Pharaohs made a bright start to the qualifying campaign thanks to their away win against Congo, while Ghana were held to a disappointing goalless draw at home by minnows Uganda.

The seven-time African champions lead the group with three points, two ahead of second-placed Ghana.

Egypt have made only two World Cup appearances, both in Italy in 1934 and 1990.
