GFA introduces minimum salary cap for Ghana Premier League players

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has directed all Ghana Premier League clubs to pay players no less than GHC 1,500 per month, starting from the 2025/26 season.
The decision forms part of a broader push to improve player welfare and professionalise the domestic game. It follows extensive engagements between the GFA and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG).
In a statement on its official website, the GFA confirmed the policy shift, describing it as a “major step in enhancing conditions of service for players.”
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the introduction of minimum monthly salaries for professional footballers in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), Division One League (DOL), and the Women’s Premier League (WPL). This major policy shift forms part of ongoing efforts by the GFA to enhance the conditions of service for players and professionalise the domestic game. It also follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) ahead of the Association’s last Congress.”
The GFA further noted that a standard contract template for players has already been rolled out across GPL clubs, ensuring uniformity and transparency.
As part of the new policy:
Ghana Premier League players must earn a minimum net salary of GHC 1,500 monthly.
Similar provisions are expected to be extended to Division One League and Women’s Premier League players, though specific figures are yet to be announced.
The move is expected to ease long-standing concerns about low wages in the domestic leagues while raising the standard of professionalism in Ghana football.
