UCL: Valverde hat-trick puts Real Madrid in command against Manchester City

A sensational first-half hat-trick from Federico Valverde handed Real Madrid a commanding advantage over Manchester City in their UEFA Champions League last-16 encounter.
Valverde produced a display of outstanding quality to punish City’s defensive lapses, putting the Spanish giants firmly in control despite the absence of several key players.
Real Madrid were without injured stars Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham and long-term absentee Rodrygo, but still showed enough attacking threat to trouble the English giants.
City began brightly and created early pressure, but their promising start unravelled midway through the first half. The breakthrough came on 20 minutes when Thibaut Courtois launched a long pass that fell behind Nico O’Reilly, allowing Valverde to round goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma before finishing from a tight angle.
Seven minutes later, the Uruguayan doubled Real’s lead with a composed low finish across Donnarumma.
Valverde then completed his hat-trick in spectacular fashion, collecting a delicate lofted pass before cleverly lifting the ball over Marc Guehi and volleying past the goalkeeper.
Real Madrid nearly extended their lead shortly after the hour mark when Vinícius Júnior won a penalty following a challenge from Donnarumma. However, the Italian goalkeeper redeemed himself by diving low to his left to save the spot-kick.
City briefly threatened a response when O’Reilly seized on a loose ball in the penalty area, but Courtois reacted quickly, stretching out a leg to deny the effort.
The result leaves Pep Guardiola’s side facing a daunting task if they are to keep their Champions League hopes alive against the record European champions.
With a mountain to climb, City will be hoping to over turn the 3 goal deficit next week when Real Madrid visit the Etihad stadium in the return leg, and hopefully progress to the next stage.
