Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has announced the arrival of two locomotives and 20 freight wagons to strengthen cargo operations on Ghana’s railway network as part of ongoing efforts to revitalise the rail transport sector.

The new equipment is expected to improve freight movement across the country and support the government’s broader agenda of reducing the heavy reliance on road transport for cargo haulage.

According to the Minister, the acquisition is aimed at enhancing efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in the transportation of goods, while also boosting the overall performance of the railway system.

He described the development as a significant milestone in the modernisation of Ghana’s transport infrastructure and the expansion of rail’s role in national development.

The Minister explained that the investment forms part of a wider government strategy to build an integrated transport system that supports economic growth, trade facilitation, and improved connectivity for businesses and communities.

He reaffirmed government’s commitment to sustained investment in the railway sector, stressing that rail transport remains key to easing pressure on roads and supporting industrialisation and regional trade.

The newly acquired locomotives and freight wagons, he added, will help lay the foundation for a stronger and more resilient transport system capable of meeting the country’s growing logistics and freight demands.
