Three stricken in container shop mystery — young woman dead, mother comatose in Koforidua

A tragedy of unclear origin has claimed one life and left two others fighting for survival after three individuals collapsed inside a container shop at the Effiduase Airport community, their simultaneous incapacitation suggesting poisoning or other malevolent intervention rather than natural affliction.
Freda Agyeiwaa Benson, 26, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Eastern Regional Hospital.
Her mother, Leticia Bamfoa, remained unconscious as medical staff worked to stabilise her condition. A 12-year-old girl identified as Juliet regained consciousness but presented in dire condition, her body wracked by haemorrhagic vomiting that alarmed medical professionals.
The sequence of events unfolded across Friday night and Saturday morning.
According to Kofi Boakye, Freda’s fiancé, the three had been preparing food on Friday evening in preparation for a relative’s impending wedding ceremony.
After completing their culinary preparations, they retired inside the container shop for the night.
Alarm surfaced Saturday morning when repeated attempts to summon the occupants went unanswered. Neighbours and family members, growing increasingly concerned at the silence, forced entry and discovered a scene of catastrophe: two individuals prostrate and unresponsive, one conscious but gravely weakened.
Emergency evacuation transported all three to the Eastern Regional Hospital where medical examination and preliminary laboratory testing commenced.
Initial investigations ruled out food poisoning — a natural first hypothesis given that the victims had been preparing meals — forcing medical personnel to contemplate alternative causative mechanisms.
Doctors have indicated that definitive determination of causation will require expanded investigation, including autopsy examination of the deceased. The absence of an obvious medical explanation lends urgency to those determinations.
Yet the investigation’s progression faces impediment.
The family, despite the severity of the circumstances and the proximity of the Effiduase District Police Command, has not formally reported the incident to law enforcement.
That failure to activate police investigation constrains the capacity to preserve evidence or pursue lines of inquiry that might illuminate what transpired within the container shop.
Community sources have introduced a complicating element: the land upon which the container shop sits is subject to ongoing legal dispute.
Additionally, Freda had purportedly received threats in the recent past — communications suggestive of deliberate targeting rather than random misfortune.
The convergence of these factors — simultaneous collapse of three individuals, preliminary exclusion of food poisoning, property litigation involving the premises, prior threats directed at the deceased — suggests the possibility of deliberate poisoning or other intentional harm.
Yet without formal police investigation and forensic examination, such speculation remains merely conjecture.
The two survivors remain hospitalised, their recovery trajectories uncertain as medical staff continue therapeutic interventions designed to counteract whatever toxin or agent precipitated their incapacitation.
