Interior Minister, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced significant changes to Ghana’s public holiday calendar.

The government, through the Interior Ministry, has submitted the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to Parliament.

The bill proposes making July 1 a new public holiday and reinstating the celebration of Founder’s Day on September 21.

The minister made this announcement earlier today on the floor of Parliament.

The bill also includes a provision to shift all midweek public holidays which falls on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays to the nearest Friday. The government says the goal is to create longer weekends and improve productivity.

However, the Minority in Parliament has criticised the Majority for fast-tracking the bill under a certificate of urgency.

Opposition MPs argue that the move sidelines more urgent national issues that require Parliament’s attention.

Despite the pushback, Parliament passed the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
