Ameenu Shardow calls for massive investment to revive Ghana’s continental competitiveness

Ameenu Shardow, General Manager of Dreams FC, has called for heavy investment in Ghanaian club football to restore competitiveness at the continental level, following the early exits of Bibiani GoldStars and Asante Kotoko from the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup.

For the second consecutive year, Ghana will have no representative in the CAF Inter-Club group stages, a worrying trend that Shardow attributes to underfunded infrastructure, player retention issues, and inconsistent participation.

“We need heavy investment in infrastructure and playing body so that we can retain more of our quality players,” Shardow told Joy Sports.

Key Reform Pillars According to Shardow

  • Infrastructure Investment: Stadiums, training facilities, and medical support
  • Squad Development: Better contracts to retain top talent
  • Continental Consistency: Regular participation to build experience and confidence
  • Mental Readiness: Eliminating inferiority complex through exposure and support

“If we get a good injection of investment in our local game, we will compete very favourably in African club competitions,” he added.

With the CAF group stages kicking off later this month, Shardow’s comments reignite the debate on how Ghanaian football can reclaim its place among Africa’s elite.
