Andre Ayew equals AFCON appearances record
Ghana’s captain, Andre Ayew, has achieved a historic milestone by equaling the record for the most appearances in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ayew reached this milestone by featuring in Ghana’s match against Mozambique on January 22, 2022.
The record was previously held solely by Cameroon legend Rigobert Song, who played in 36 AFCON matches.
Now, Andre Ayew joins Song as a joint record holder, having also played in 36 AFCON matches.
In addition to this accomplishment, Ayew becomes only the third player to participate in eight different AFCON tournaments, a feat shared with Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan and Rigobert Song.
Ayew achieved this milestone during Ghana’s opening game against Cape Verde in the 2023 AFCON.
Despite these individual achievements, Ghana’s campaign in the 2023 AFCON ended on a disappointing note as they failed to secure a win in the group stage, drawing their final match against Mozambique after squandering a two-goal lead.
