Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin ,has called for the 24-hour economy policy to be presented before Parliament for debate following its official launch.

He believes such a move will secure broad-based support across political and institutional lines, ensuring effective and inclusive implementation.

Speaking in Accra on Thursday after receiving the policy document from Mr. Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Advisor for the 24-Hour Economy Secretariat, Mr. Bagbin said a parliamentary debate would give the programme legitimacy and help position it as a national, rather than partisan, initiative.

“This policy must be presented to Parliament after the launch to give it an official stamp and provide the opportunity to be debated to get the buy-in of all organs of government.”

“We have to make it a national programme to ensure its seamless implementation. We don’t need to categorise it on partisan, religious and ethnic basis,” he said.

He referenced past policies such as the Vision 2020 initiative under former President Jerry John Rawlings and the Free Senior High School programme under former President Akufo-Addo, both of which were subjected to parliamentary scrutiny to foster consensus.

Mr. Bagbin stressed that the 24-Hour Economy must transcend partisan, religious, and ethnic divides to become a truly national programme aimed at boosting productivity and creating prosperity for all Ghanaians.

The policy, which will be officially launched by former President John Mahama on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, is designed to transform and stimulate the private sector, drive job creation, and accelerate economic growth.

Mr. Tanoh explained that the programme is structured around three main pillars: Production Transformation, Supply Chain and Market Efficiency, and Human Capital Development.

These are supported by eight sub-programmes,including Grow 24, Make 24, Show Ghana, Go Ghana, Digital Technology, and Aspire 24,  aimed at reshaping the mindset of Ghanaian workers for enhanced productivity.

The 24-Hour Economy was a key campaign promise of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), intended to spur job creation and drive inclusive economic development.
