Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has reaffirmed the central bank’s dedication to maintaining the strength of the cedi and reinforcing public confidence in the national currency.

Speaking at the internal launch of the Cedi@60 anniversary at the Bank Square, Dr. Asiama highlighted the Bank’s longstanding efforts to uphold monetary stability through strategic reforms.

“Over the years, we have strengthened our inflation-targeting framework, enhanced regulatory oversight, and embraced innovation in payment systems,” he noted.

Dr. Asiama credited these achievements to the professionalism and commitment of BoG staff, both past and present. “These reforms are the result of the diligence and professionalism of Bank staff across generations,” he said.

Looking to the future, the Governor emphasized that the resilience of the cedi will increasingly depend on how Ghana navigates key global and regional trends — including the rise of digital finance, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), climate change, and global economic interconnectedness.

“We must ensure that future generations inherit not just a stable currency, but a stronger, more respected economy,” he stated, calling on staff to recommit themselves to the mission of preserving the cedi’s strength, promoting price stability, and supporting inclusive growth.

Dr. Asiama also paid tribute to retirees and early pioneers of the Bank for their foundational role in sustaining the currency’s value over the decades. He expressed his “deepest appreciation for all the work done over the years.”

He announced that the internal launch marked the beginning of a six-month-long celebration of the cedi’s 60th anniversary. Key events planned include:

The official Cedi@60 launch on August 8 at the Accra International Conference Centre

Public lectures and policy dialogues on the evolution and future of the cedi

Educational outreach initiatives targeting youth awareness

A historical exhibition tracing the cedi’s transformation

A national currency conference to close the celebrations by year-end

This year’s theme, “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience”, reflects the broader significance of the milestone, the Governor said.
