E/R: Five crushed to death after crash on Accra-Kumasi highway
12th April 2021
Five persons have been crushed to death after the vehicle they were travelling in got involved in an accident at Obretema, a town in the Suhum Municipality on the Accra Kumasi Highway on Sunday, April 11, 2021.
Police say the incident occurred Sunday afternoon around 2:20pm.
It involved a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number GW 7444-21 with passengers on board from Kumasi direction towards Accra, Freshhope1 reported.
Three male and two female adults who were on board the vehicle died on the spot whilst the rest were rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital for treatment.
The suspect driver, Eric Ohemang (35 years) alleged that upon reaching a section of the road at Obretema near Suhum, his offside rear tyre suddenly got burst whilst the vehicle was in motion.
In the process, he lost control of the steering wheel and the vehicle somersaulted and landed into a ditch at the nearside when facing Accra direction.
The deceased bodies were removed and have been sent to the same hospital morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy.
The suspect driver is also on admission.
Meanwhile, the accident vehicle has been towed to the police station.
A number of road carnages have been recorded on that stretch this year.
The situation forced the MTTD, DVLA and NRSC to embark on a campaign dubbed Arrive Alive Road Safety Operation prior to the Easter festivities to help reduce the spate of road fatalities on that stretch.
