FIFA expands U-20 Women’s World Cup slots, Africa gets additional representation
In a significant development, the FIFA Executive Council has announced an expansion of the slots for the U-20 Women’s World Cup scheduled to be held in Colombia in 2024.
The tournament, originally planned for 16 teams, will now feature 24 teams, offering a broader platform for young women’s football on the global stage.
The distribution of slots among the confederations will be as follows:
- AFC: 4 slots
- CAF: 4 slots
- Concacaf: 4 slots
- CONMEBOL: 4 slots
- OFC: 2 slots
- UEFA: 5 slots
- Host country (Colombia): 1 slot
This expansion decision is particularly significant for Africa, as it doubles the allocation of slots for the continent, moving from two to four.
This means that two additional African teams will have the opportunity to participate in the forthcoming tournament.
Historically, since 2006, the qualification process for the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Africa involved a home-and-away knockout format.
This format continued until four teams remained, with half of them earning their coveted spots at the international tournament.
The expanded slots will open up new opportunities for African women’s football, providing a platform for more nations to showcase their young talent and compete at the highest level of the sport.
The decision is a positive step towards the growth and development of women’s football in Africa and around the world.
In the last edition of the U-20 Women’s World Cup held in Costa Rica, Ghana and Nigeria represented the African continent.
With the additional slots, more African nations will now have the chance to participate, adding diversity and competitiveness to the tournament.
