Fire destroys shops at Accra Arts Centre

Several artisans and traders at the Arts Centre in Accra are counting their losses after a fire tore through parts of the facility on the evening of Tuesday, June 24, destroying numerous shops and valuable property.
The blaze, which started around 6:15 p.m., is believed to have been sparked by a faulty gas cylinder. Eyewitnesses say a worker attempting to boil water accidentally triggered the fire, which rapidly spread through the wooden structures that house many of the centre’s shops.
While no injuries were reported, the damage is extensive. Traders estimate losses in the tens of thousands of cedis, with many losing tools, inventory, and equipment vital to their livelihoods.
“I’ve lost all my equipment. How will I survive? How will I take care of my children?” said Esther Atanga, a seamstress and single mother affected by the fire.
Another victim estimated his losses at GHS 20,000, adding: “I had three machines in the building. I couldn’t salvage anything due to the intensity of the fire. God being so good, no one was hurt. At this point, we urge the government to come to our aid.”
The incident has left many small business owners at the Arts Centre in a state of uncertainty, as they now face the difficult task of rebuilding with little to no financial safety net. Calls for government and public support are growing as affected workers seek relief.
